Bitcoin Observatory
The Bitcoin Observatory @ Politecnico di Torino is an academic initiative devoted to research, higher education, and public outreach on Bitcoin. Its mission is to investigate this technology with scientific rigor and full independence, providing evidence-based insights to researchers, enterprises, institutions, and the wider public.
The Observatory primarily focuses on the Bitcoin protocol and the network of full nodes, while also monitoring the evolution of second-layer protocols, most notably the Lightning Network, and other scalability solutions. It examines both the technological mechanisms and systemic dynamics that ensure the security, resilience, and scalability of the Bitcoin ecosystem, as well as its economic underpinnings and sustainability challenges. In particular, it analyzes mining practices, energy consumption, and environmental impact, with the goal of identifying viable pathways toward more sustainable and efficient operations.
Beyond research, the Observatory publishes periodic reports, organizes public events, and promotes informed debate. Its ambition is to serve as an authoritative reference point for understanding Bitcoin in its technological, economic, environmental, and societal dimensions.
